Many couples are apprehensive about starting relationship counseling because they think that seeking help means that their relationship has failed. Why Do I Need Couples Counseling?

You don't have to live with feeling bad about yourself, your partner, and your relationship. Explore the difference couples therapy can make!

There are many reasons why couples make the decision to seek counseling. In some cases, an event in the relationship puts couples in what feels like a make-or-break period. They want to use counseling to discover if there is a way forward following hurt, betrayal, or infidelity. Other couples are having trouble navigating their way through conflicts. Some just want to make the relationship they are committed to work better, feel better, and last longer! Here are some common reasons to consider virtual couples counseling with Liberate via Therapy:

●       Communication is breaking down in your relationship

●       You feel stuck in your relationship

●       It seems like you argue over everything

●       There is constant tension or conflict in your relationship

●       You're having trouble agreeing on how to move forward in your relationship

●       You would like to have a deeper connection with your partner

●       One of you is struggling with sex addiction or sexual compulsions

●       You'd like to find more sexual satisfaction in your relationship

●       There is a breakdown of trust in the relationship

●       Your relationship has been affected by infidelity or betrayal

In therapy, couples can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a candid, confidential space. You may find that your experience in couples therapy inspires you to branch off into individual therapy that allows you to address issues that are making it hard for you to participate in your relationship.

What to Expect From Online Couples Therapy

Liberate via Therapy utilizes emotionally focused therapy (EFT) when helping couples to connect and communicate. Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson 40 years ago, EFT is a form of relationship counseling focused on improving a couple's relationship by reigniting the physical sparks and emotional bonds that drew them together. EFT draws heavily on research involving attachment theory. As you explore patterns of feelings and behaviors with your partner in couples therapy, you may begin to see the ways that your attachment with your primary caretaker in childhood still affects the way you relate to your partner today.

Ultimately, the insights gained in therapy can help you to learn how to be physically and psychologically responsive and receptive to your partner in a way that fosters a satisfying relationship. EFT has been given top standing by the American Psychological Association (APA). It is widely recognized as being the most effective form of evidence-based couples therapy!

Many couples begin the therapy process after coming to a place of severe distress, anger, and alienation. It's common to believe that a relationship is beyond saving. Through the therapy journey, couples are able to unwrap all of the emotions they are feeling to get to the root of why painful themes keep emerging within their dynamic. In some cases, experiences from childhood lead to strong feelings of abandonment and distrust. The person affected by these things then acts out emotions of being unlovable or helpless with their partner. This can cause the other partner to feel vilified or stifled. Of course, this is just one example of the many different ways that the experiences we bring to relationships can play out to cause conflict or misunderstandings.

My training in EFT enables me to help couples have transformative experiences that allow them to view conflicts and arguments differently. By identifying negative cycles, couples can better understand the dynamics that are creating tension, resentment, and distrust. When offering couples therapy, I integrate my expertise in cross-cultural/multi-ethnic, bi-racial, queer, sex-positive, and pleasure-focused studies to help my clients explore all aspects of their relationships. Liberate via Therapy offers queer couples therapy in a space of safety, sensitivity, and understanding.
